Being a part of EightCAP’s AmeriCorps Seniors Senior Companion Program has been such a blessing. The importance and impact of this program, in my opinion, cannot be overstated.
The sense of community and the fr4eindships which I have made over time have helped with my isolation, improved my sense of self, and even relieved my stress about paying bills. My adult son lives quite a distance away and is busy with his life. His absence left me with the deep need I have to care for others, unfulfilled. Now, I have this opportunity.
I have been able to utilize the many tools, tips and training we have been provided, to help both clients and me. I have also learned what resources are available for them to use, and their appreciation is apparent. In quite a few situations, this has been quite life-altering for them.
Having the opportunity to laugh, cry, reminisce, assist, teach, learn, share meals, take walks or wheelchair rides, play, exercise, create, sign, and even hold hands while some of the residents were in the active dying process has been extremely gratifying.
Being with my clients who suffer from dementia has been the most rewarding for me. Helping them through their confusion, listening intently when their words cannot be understood, encouraging them to eat when they see no need to do so, brushing their hair, giving much-needed hugs, taking them outside to enjoy the sunshine., reminding them of things and words, relieving their frustrations, or even distracting them from “needing to go home right now” and providing calm and careful explanations, are some of the things I find gratifying.
I sincerely hope to remain part of the Senior Companion Program for a long time to come.
