Head Start has been such a blessing for our family in so many ways! My 4-year-old quit fighting me on potty training and finally gave into it. He stays sitting during meals, has managed a great routine/schedule, made friends and usually plays well with others his age now. He communicates better and has gotten into crafts and reading more. I do a lot with him at home but having that help and support from the classroom has made a huge difference.
Our youngest son (18 months) was born with Macrocephaly (large head) so between neurosurgery, and Early Head Start it has relieved so much stress for us in monitoring his development to make sure nothing is wrong. Head Start helps to track milestones, so that has been a blessing for us to go to the appointments and be able to say, “no we don’t have any concerns currently.” We help him develop his life skills through fun activities that I create, and our visitor Melissa will tie that activity to milestone development. We work so well together to add more to the activities, or she can let me know what he is developing or learning from doing them.
He colors quite a bit, loves to read and sing, he has started small puzzles, naming everyday objects, naming animals and copying sounds. He eats well independently with utensils and dishes. Finally, he can drink from a straw and cup, so hopefully we can cut out the bottle soon. We not only love Head Start but have gained information and developmental skills for the boys. Every child should benefit from Head Start, before enrolling in kindergarten.
