(Stanton, MI) – Kathryn Nerychel, a dedicated Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteer from Lakeview, has been named the 2025 Michigan Community Action Volunteer of the Year for her exceptional service to children in Montcalm County. The award was presented during a recognition ceremony in Lansing on May 21, 2025.

Each year, Michigan Community Action honors individuals and organizations who go above and beyond in their volunteerism and philanthropy. The Volunteer of the Year Award celebrates those whose commitment to service strengthens Michigan’s communities and transforms lives.

Nerychel has served as a Montcalm CASA volunteer for six and a half years, advocating on behalf of eight children across four child abuse and neglect cases. Her role has been to ensure that these children, removed from their homes through no fault of their own, have a consistent, compassionate adult advocating for their best interests throughout the court process.

“I was honored to be recognized for this award,” said Nerychel. “But I truly share this with every CASA. Each CASA volunteer makes a meaningful difference in the life of the child they advocate for.”

Jamie Gorby, Program Coordinator for Montcalm CASA, praised Nerychel for her exceptional dedication and heart. “Kathy brings a compassionate, educator’s perspective to every case. She is fierce yet gentle in her advocacy, always going the extra mile to support the children she serves. Whether it’s attending their band concerts, sporting events, or showing up with a new book in a favorite series, she connects with each child on a personal level. She sends postcards from her travels, writes encouragement notes, and brings favorite snacks—reminding each child they are seen, valued, and worthy of love. Kathy’s care might look simple on the surface, but these small, consistent gestures are profoundly healing for children who’ve experienced trauma. She is a cornerstone of our CASA team and a gift to our community. I can’t think of anyone more deserving of this honor.”

Montcalm CASA is a program of EightCAP, Inc., a Community Action Agency serving Gratiot, Ionia, Isabella, and Montcalm counties. The CASA program trains and supports volunteers to advocate for abused and neglected children involved in the Montcalm County Juvenile Court system. CASA volunteers stay with each case until it is resolved, and the child is placed in a safe, permanent home—often serving as the one consistent adult in a child’s life during an incredibly uncertain time.
