(Greenville, MI)EightCAP, Inc. is proud to announce that the Greenville Area Community Foundation (GACF) has awarded a $25,000 grant to support the Greenville Optimist Camp Wah-Wah-Tay-See, administered by EightCAP, Inc., a beloved summer program that provides a safe, inclusive, and enriching experience for individuals with disabilities ages 5-81.

For more than 60 years, Greenville Optimist Camp has created opportunities for campers to explore their abilities, build friendships, and experience the joy of summer in a fully supported environment. Each year, the camp welcomes children and adults with disabilities from across Montcalm County and surrounding areas, reflecting its regional importance and lasting reputation. Through activities such as swimming, canoeing, fishing, archery, arts and crafts, nature education, and campfires, campers build self-confidence, social skills, and independence. The camp also integrates physical activity and outdoor play to support both emotional and physical well-being.

“This generous funding from the Greenville Area Community Foundation helps ensure that campers of all abilities can continue to experience the joy of summer in a setting designed for them,” said Bob Hemmingsen, Camp Director. “For many participants, this week is the highlight of their year—a time to reconnect with friends, gain new experiences, and truly feel accepted for who they are.”

Each summer, 60 to 80 campers attend Greenville Optimist Camp. Nearly 30% of campers live in group homes, while others live with family members who rely on the week of camp for essential respite and renewal. The program is intentionally affordable—while the true cost of the camp is approximately $300 per camper, families are asked to contribute only $20, ensuring that no one is turned away due to financial hardship.

“We’re deeply thankful to GACF for investing in a program that brings joy, independence, and belonging to our campers year after year,” said Lori Johnson, President of EightCAP, Inc. “Their support helps us keep this cherished tradition alive and accessible for the children and adults who look forward to it all year long.”

Beyond recreation, Greenville Optimist Camp fulfills a vital community need—creating social connection and lifelong memories for people who often face isolation due to disability or financial barriers. Campers leave with new skills, increased confidence, and a strong sense of belonging, while caregivers gain valuable rest knowing their loved ones are supported by trained, compassionate staff.
