Grandma Vicki: Helping Little Learners Shine

I started volunteering as a parent volunteer in my grandson’s kindergarten classroom. I enjoyed being with the kids and working with them. I was retired and it gave me something to do, and a chance to get out of the house. At the end of the school year, the teacher connected me with EightCAP’s Foster Grandparent Program, and I soon became a Foster Grandparent.

Being a classroom volunteer has taught me a lot. There is so much more learning than when I was in kindergarten. I have learned patience, how to deal with the kids on their level, and to respect each kid as an individual. I have worked with the kids in small groups and one-on-one. It is amazing to see how much they mature and how much they learn by the end of the school year.

One student needed one-on-one help because he was having a difficult time learning his letters. We worked hard together so he would get to know the letters. Eventually, as he learned and remembered some of the letters, he became so excited and proud. It made him more confident and willing to try.

My teacher is kind and patient with me, and we get along very well. I have learned so much by watching her interactions with the kids. We work well as a team, and she has used some of my suggestions for activities and ways to do things. She always lets me know I am an important part of the class.

I have been “Grandma” with AmeriCorps Seniors Foster Grandparent Program for five years. This program has given me something to focus on each day and a sense of accomplishment and perseverance when I can help the kids learn. I’ve also been provided with training on different disabilities, such as autism, ADHD, and mental health and different family situations and the effects it can have on some of the children. I also love the hugs from the kids and giving them in return. I still see kids from previous years and get hugs and smiles from them.

Being “Grandma” has been a very rewarding and interesting journey!
